2008-2009 University Theater Season

How His Bride Came To Abraham, by Karen Sunde (drama)
            Spotlight Arena Theater
            October 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 - 7:30 p.m.
            October 5, 12- 3:00 p.m.

HOW HIS BRIDE CAME TO ABRAHAM creates an extraordinary modern pacifist myth in which a wounded male Israeli soldier and a female Palestinian terrorist experience each other’s passionate hunger for their homes and rights....it indelibly etches itself upon viewers’ souls because of the human encounter, as wary people drop their guard with an enemy. Contemporary Dramatists
“The play happens in the stormy Israel-occupied zone of southern Lebanon, just north of Israel. In classic Romeo and Juliet fashion, the play centers upon the romance between young people on warring sides—an Israeli soldier and an Arab woman....” Michael Sommers, The Star-Ledger

Little Women, music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, book by Allan Knee
based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott (a musical)
            Ford Theater
            November 13, 14, 15, 21, 22 - 7:30 p.m.
            November 16, 23 - 3:00 p.m.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own family experiences (and novel), LITTLE WOMEN, follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. The beloved story of the March sisters deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written.  LITTLE WOMEN embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit. This powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope–the sounds of a young America finding its voice.

Almost Maine (Second Stage Blackbox Production), by John Cariani (a comedy)
            Spotlight Arena Theater
            January 22, 23, 24 - 7:30 p.m.
            January 25 - 3:00 p.m.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend–almost–in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

The Servant of Two Masters, by Carlo Goldoni - adapted by Dorothy Louise (a farce)
            Ford Theater
            February 12, 13, 14, 20, 21 - 7:30 p.m.
            February 15, 22 - 3:00 p.m.

In THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS, Carlo Goldoni’s crafty factotum, Truffaldino, turns somersaults both to please his masters and serve himself in one of the great classic commedia dell’arte plays of world drama. This new adaptation by Dorothy Louise captures the remarkable pace of the story in fresh dialogue that is attuned to contemporary American audiences.

Miss Julie, by August Strindberg (a tragic drama)
            Spotlight Arena Theater
            March 26, 27, 28, & April 3, 4 - 7:30 p.m.
            March 29, April 5 - 3:00 p.m.

MISS JULIE vividly depicts the battle of the sexes and classes that ensues when a wealthy businessman’s daughter falls for her father’s bitter servant.  August Strindberg’s renowned 1888 play brings to scalding life the excoriating words of the stage’s preeminent surveyor of all things rotten in the state of male-female relations.

The Tender Land, music by Aaron Copland, Liberetto - by Horace Everett (an opera)
            Ford Theater
            April 16, 17, 18 - 7:30 p.m.
            April 19 - 3:00 p.m.

Those who love Copland’s Appalachian Spring and its wide-open, American, innocent–but–energetic idiom will discover much of the same feeling of warmth and homespun verisimilitude here.  THE TENDER LAND focuses on Laurie, a young girl who would be the first in her family to graduate from high school.  Yet she longs for her own independence and new experiences apart from her overprotective family and small town life.  As the entire town gathers together to dance and celebrate Laurie’s graduation, she meets two drifters, Martin and Top, who were recently hired by her grandfather as field hands.   Love soon blossoms between Laurie and Martin, and they plan to run away together.   Laurie is left broken-hearted, but she is determined to find a new life of her own.

Dance Ensemble, directed by Christine Cobb
            Ford Theater
            April 30 & May 1, 2 - 7:30 p.m.

The May performance marks the 17th annual concert that the Ensemble has produced under the direction of Christine Cobb.  Ms. Cobb is Associate Professor   of Theater and Dance at YSU and also serves as artistic director and advisor to the Dance Ensemble. The concert features choreographed works from visiting artists, students, and faculty, and includes the dance styles and genres of modern dance, jazz, hip hop, swing, tap, and ballet.  The YSU Dance Ensemble will perform in Ford Theater.
