ADMISSION POLICY FOR
COMMUNICATION STUDIES
All students seeking to become a Communication
Studies major must enter the program through a Pre-Communication Studies
major. Requirements to enter the
Pre-Communication Studies major vary. Entering freshmen may simply declare a
Pre-Communication Studies major. Transfer students from outside the university
must be in “good standing.” Transfer
students from within the university must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
The Pre-Communication Studies major is designed to
prepare students to succeed in the Communication Studies major by providing the
necessary foundation. It provides students with the opportunity to evaluate
their commitment to studying communication and to demonstrate their ability to
do so.
When Pre-Communication Studies majors successfully
complete the following requirements, they may transfer to
the Communications Studies major.
1. Complete COMST 1500, COMST
1545, COMST 1530, and ENG 1550.
2. Complete a total of 25
semester hours of university level course work. (Courses listed in #1
plus 15 hours outside the Department of Communication and Theater.)
3. Have an overall YSU GPA of
2.5.
Pre-Communication Studies majors are assigned to a
faculty advisor by the Chair of the Communication and Theater Department.
Students are expected to meet with their advisor prior to registration and are
encouraged to meet with them whenever they have questions or concerns, and to
track progress (see form on reverse side.)
The advisor will certify the completion of the
Pre-Communication Studies requirements by signing and dating the form on the
back of this sheet. The student then takes the signed form to the Department of
Communication and Theater, Bliss Hall #2000, and fills out an Intra-University
Transfer form to change his/her major to Communications Studies.
