Michael Crist has been a member of the Dana School of
Music faculty since 1983. His teaching responsibilities have included; applied trombone,
assistant band director, director of Jazz Ensemble II and III, conductor of
the Dana Trombone Ensemble, and numerous classes in music education and music
technology. Dr. Crist currently serves as Director of the Dana School
of Music. Prior to coming to Youngstown State University, Dr. Crist taught
music in public schools in upstate New York. Dr. Crist’s degrees
include a B.M. and B.M.E. form Ithaca College, New York, a M.M. in trombone
performance from Youngstown State University, and a Ph.D. in music education
from Kent State University. Dr. Crist has studied conducting with Edward
Gobrecht, Edward Lisk, Robert Fleming, and Wayne Gorder. His trombone
teachers include Frank Brown, William Harris, Bruce Burritt, Charles Dalkert,
Allen Ostrander, Vern Kagarice, and James Desano. Dr. Crist is principal
trombone with the Youngstown Symphony and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. He
has also performed with the Tri-Cities Opera, Binghamton Symphony, Broome
County (NY) Pops Orchestra, and the Cleveland Opera Orchestra. Dr. Crist
is an active member of the International Trombone Association, where he served
as a member of the Scholarship Committee, and as Membership Chair for the
state of Ohio. Dr. Crist has been published in the International
Trombone Association Journal, the O.M.E.A. Triad, Dialogues
In Instrumental Music Education, Dissertations Abstracts, Contributions
To Music Education, and has served as Editor of Contributions
To Music Education. Dr. Crist also serves as chair of the O.M.E.A.
Research Committee and is currently Associate Editor of Contributions to
Music Education. Dr. Crist is also president of the Ohio Association of
Music Schools. Dr. Crist is a member of the Dana Faculty Brass Quintet,
which recently released the Quintet’s first CD, Apocalypse. Dr.
Crist also released his own CD, What To Do, featuring twentieth century
music for the trombone.
