Darla Funk, Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music, holds degrees from the University of Northern Colorado (B.A. and M.M.E.) and Kent State University (Ph.D.). She taught high school French in Englewood, Colorado before becoming an elementary music specialist in Billings, Montana. Her dissertation "A descriptive analysis of music attitudes, music aptitude, and music experiences of students ages six to eight in the Montana Migrant Children's Education Program" was completed in 1985.
Since joining the Dana School of Music faculty in 1975, she has served as a clinician and lecturer on music in early childhood, teacher education, and migrant education. In addition to the supervision of student teachers, her responsibilities include teaching a variety of graduate courses (Research in Music Education, Foundations of Music Education, Measurement and Evaluation, Elementary School Practicum), undergraduate courses (Music in Early Childhood, Music Teaching in the Elementary School), and workshop topics (General Music in the Middle School, Orff and Kodaly Techniques, Enriching the General Music Curriculum).
As an active member of the Ohio Music Education Association, Dr. Funk serves on the Research Committee and on the executive board of the Ohio Society for Music Teacher Education. She also holds a position on the editorial board of Contributions to Music Education, an Ohio music education research journal.
