Piano Week

Piano Week is an annual event promoting music for and with piano. Its main purpose is the yearly commission and premiere performance of a new concerto for Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Piano. Piano Week features international guest artists, chamber groups, new works for piano and jazz groups. NEW: The Piano Week 2008 Composition Prize! Details on this website coming soon.

Piano Week 2007 March 5-9 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS. All events take place in the DeYor Performing ArtsCenter* unless otherwise indicated.

  • Monday, March 5: 8 p.m. $$ OPENING NIGHT: World Premiere and 8-Hand Extravaganza! World Premiere of the commissioned Concerto Stargazer for Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Piano by Thomas of composition and theory, Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio featuring the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of Youngstown State University under the direction of Stephen Gage, Caroline Oltmanns (piano). Showstoppers for two pianos, eight hands presented by the piano faculty of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University: Diane Yazvac, Michael Schneider, Roman Rudnytsky and Caroline Oltmanns.
  • Tuesday, March 6: 4 p.m. Stars of Tomorrow - A recital in collaboration with the Youngstown Music Teachers Association with introductions by Dr. Caroline Oltmanns. 5 p.m. Master Class for Young Pianists - A master class with Piano Week Guest Brandt Fredriksen featuring students the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. 8 p.m. New Music with Piano - A concert of new works hosted by composer Till MacIvor Meyn presenting works of the Cleveland’s Composer’s Guild and others.
  • Wednesday March 7: 12 p.m. Butler Institute of American Art, Noon Concert Series** Piano Week Guest Dror Biran in Recital, works to be announced 8 p.m. Piano Week Guest Brandt Fredriksen in a Piano Solo Recital presenting Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasie and C-minor Sonata, and Liszt’s B-minor Sonata.
  • Thursday March 8 8 p.m. $$ An Evening with Jazz Piano with Piano Week Guest James Weidman featuring the Dana Faculty Jazz Ensemble: Kent Engelhardt (saxophone), Glenn Schaft (percussion), and Dave Morgan (bass).
  • Friday March 9 11 a.m. Bliss Recital Hall*** Piano Students in Recital presenting selected students of the Dana School of Music. 8 p.m. Student Pianists in Recital presenting selected students of the Dana School of Music.
