Dana Young Artist Competition

The Dana Young Artist Competition, held each year in November, is open to junior, senior and graduate students who are enrolled in applied music at the Dana School of Music. The 2006 edition of the competition will be held on November 12, 2006 beginning at 1:30 pm. Previous winners of the Young Artist Competition are ineligible. The competition will be open to the public and will be recorded by WYSU for broadcast at a later date. The application is available in Acrobat format (recommended) or in HTML. The winners for the 2003 competition were Eduardo Mandujano-Aguilar, flute, and Erin Best, piano. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Gregory Kinat, cello, and Devon Gentry/Tim Tuite, voice/trumpet. Judges were Susan Davenny Wyner, Music Director of the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra; James Gorton, Associate Principal Oboe of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; and Dr. Anne Hagan Bentz, Assistant Professor of Music at Westminster College.

The winners for the 2002 competition were Allen Cordingley, saxophone; Hyun Jin, Kim, baritone, and Cristin Vimmerstedt, piano. Honorable mentions were awarded to Aaron Scott, clarinet,; Kelly Hutchinson, soprano; and Sidney Shuler, trumpet. Judges were Stephen Hawk, Associate Professor of Music, Slippery Rick University; Dr. Melissa McBride, Music Director, Edgewood Symphony Orchestra; and Lorenzo Malfatti, Professor Emeritus, University of Cincinnati .

The winners for the 2001 competition were Andrew Erb, Trumpet; Michael Hanson, Alto Saxophone; and Michael Shevock, Trombone. The judging panel consisted of pianist Gladys Stein of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh; Bernard Goldberg, former principal flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony; and Dr. Grover Pitman, Chair of the Music Department at Westminster College.
