Q & A ABOUT ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

Who must be advised?

  • If you have less than 32 credit hours
  • If you are a first semester transfer student
  • If you play a varsity sport
  • If you are on academic warning or probation
Who should be advised?
  • Everyone at least one a year – to make sure you are on the right track
  • If you are thinking of changing your major
  • Seniors who plan on graduating within a year.
Why should I see an advisor?
  • To understand the options you have within the College, University, and you’re major.
  • To understand the curriculum you are going to follow.
  • To be confident you are taking the right courses to allow you to graduate when you want.
  • To ask any questions or discuss anything of concern in your academic career.
Whose responsibility is to make certain that all degree requirements have been met?
  • It is your responsibility
When should I be advised?
  • For questions or doubts about your academic career-anytime throughout the year.
  • For registration purposes-as soon as possible after the Schedule of Classes has been released and you have had a chance to look through it to decide on classes you want. Do not wait until your registration date to be advised!!
Who advises me?
  • A designated faculty member in your major’s department
    OR
  • The College’s academic advisor – Mrs. Mary Lou Weingart
    OR
  • See both if you have any doubts or questions regarding your curriculum, schedule, graduation, and if you want to double check that you are making progress toward graduation as you should.
What should I do to be advised?
  • Look through the Schedule of Classes and select the courses you need.
  • Go to a computer (available in the Dean’s Office) and enter the selected courses onto the advisement screen (directions are available in the first pages of the Schedule of classes).
  • Make and appointment with your faculty advisor or Mrs. Weingart.
  • Arrive to your appointment with your questions written down, so you can remember them, and a copy of your curriculum sheet (available in the Dean’s office or you may want to download it from the Advisement web page).
  • After obtaining the advisor’s approval you are now ready to register on your designated date!

REGISTRATION

  • You will receive a letter in the mail indicating your date and time for registration.
  • Obtain a copy of the Schedule of Classes and select the courses you need or desire to take.
  • If you want or need to see an advisor do it NOW (Please check the walk-in hours to see the advisor or make an appointment now). The advisor will help you go through the steps for registration.
  • During your appointed date and time (schedule also located on the back of the Schedule of Classes) find a computer with SOLAR access on campus, or dial up to SOLAR from your home computer (directions in Schedule of Classes).
  • Register for classes through SOLAR following the instructions in the Schedule of Classes or carefully following the screens in SOLAR.
  • Make sure you finalize your schedule of classes.
  • After registering-ALWAYS get a print out of your schedule (available from the Dean’s Office) to be certain your registration has gone through.
  • NOTE: sometimes due to technical problems your registration has not gone through, and you have not been registered, even though, you have gone through the process.
  • It is your responsibility to make certain you have registered correctly. If you have any doubts, please ask your academic advisor.

CHANGE OF REGISTRATION (add/drop)

  • You can change your registration as soon as you finalize your schedule.
  • If you are required to be advised-you can drop classes (except Engl 1539, 1540 or R&SK classes). However to add classes you must see your advisor again if the classes are not on your advisement screen.
  • To see your advisor you must make an appointment or during walk-in hours.
  • After changing your schedule, make sure to obtain a print out of the new schedule.

THINGS TO REMEMBER· Make an appointment with your advisor before the rush.

  • Know your curriculum and the prerequisites for the classes.
  • Know important dates for the semester (last date to add/drop/withdraw).
  • Be patient – classes may be closed-ask for a closed class permit (if available it will say on the screen in yellow), wait to see if someone drops the class, or have a back up plan.
  • NEVER wait to take a required course the semester before graduation.
  • Plan ahead to graduate by your anticipated date. Remember all courses are not offered every semester.

COMPLETE WITHDRAWL

  • To completely withdraw from the University you must choose the withdraw option from the SOLAR screen. If you do not withdraw through SOLAR you will receive Fs in your courses.
