Who
must be advised?
- If
you have less than 32 credit hours
- If
you are a first semester transfer student
- If
you play a varsity sport
- If
you are on academic warning or probation
Who
should be advised?
- Everyone
at least one a year – to make sure you are on the right track
- If
you are thinking of changing your major
- Seniors
who plan on graduating within a year.
Why
should I see an advisor?
- To
understand the options you have within the College, University,
and you’re major.
- To
understand the curriculum you are going to follow.
- To
be confident you are taking the right courses to allow you to
graduate when you want.
- To
ask any questions or discuss anything of concern in your academic
career.
Whose
responsibility is to make certain that all degree requirements have
been met?
- It
is your responsibility
When
should I be advised?
- For
questions or doubts about your academic career-anytime throughout
the year.
- For
registration purposes-as soon as possible after the Schedule of
Classes has been released and you have had a chance to look through
it to decide on classes you want. Do not wait until your registration
date to be advised!!
Who
advises me?
- A
designated faculty member in your major’s department
OR
- The
College’s academic advisor – Mrs. Mary Lou Weingart
OR
- See
both if you have any doubts or questions regarding your curriculum,
schedule, graduation, and if you want to double check that you
are making progress toward graduation as you should.
What
should I do to be advised?
- Look through the Schedule of Classes and select the courses you need.
- Go
to a computer (available in the Dean’s Office) and enter the selected
courses onto the advisement screen (directions are available in
the first pages of the Schedule of classes).
- Make
and appointment with your faculty advisor or Mrs. Weingart.
- Arrive
to your appointment with your questions written down, so you can
remember them, and a copy of your curriculum sheet (available
in the Dean’s office or you may want to download it from the Advisement
web page).
- After
obtaining the advisor’s approval you are now ready to register
on your designated date!
REGISTRATION
- You
will receive a letter in the mail indicating your date and time
for registration.
- Obtain
a copy of the Schedule of Classes and select the courses you need
or desire to take.
- If
you want or need to see an advisor do it NOW (Please check the
walk-in hours to see the advisor or make an appointment now).
The advisor will help you go through the steps for registration.
- During
your appointed date and time (schedule also located on the back
of the Schedule of Classes) find a computer with SOLAR access
on campus, or dial up to SOLAR from your home computer (directions
in Schedule of Classes).
- Register
for classes through SOLAR following the instructions in the Schedule
of Classes or carefully following the screens in SOLAR.
- Make
sure you finalize your schedule of classes.
- After
registering-ALWAYS get a print out of your schedule (available
from the Dean’s Office) to be certain your registration has gone
through.
- NOTE:
sometimes due to technical problems your registration has not
gone through, and you have not been registered, even though, you
have gone through the process.
- It
is your responsibility to make certain you have registered correctly.
If you have any doubts, please ask your academic advisor.
CHANGE
OF REGISTRATION (add/drop)
- You
can change your registration as soon as you finalize your schedule.
- If
you are required to be advised-you can drop classes (except Engl
1539, 1540 or R&SK classes). However to add classes you must
see your advisor again if the classes are not on your advisement
screen.
- To
see your advisor you must make an appointment or during walk-in
hours.
- After
changing your schedule, make sure to obtain a print out of the
new schedule.
THINGS
TO REMEMBER· Make an appointment with your advisor before the rush.
- Know
your curriculum and the prerequisites for the classes.
- Know
important dates for the semester (last date to add/drop/withdraw).
- Be
patient – classes may be closed-ask for a closed class permit
(if available it will say on the screen in yellow), wait to see
if someone drops the class, or have a back up plan.
- NEVER
wait to take a required course the semester before graduation.
- Plan
ahead to graduate by your anticipated date. Remember all courses
are not offered every semester.
COMPLETE
WITHDRAWL
- To
completely withdraw from the University you must choose the withdraw
option from the SOLAR screen. If you do not withdraw through SOLAR
you will receive Fs in your courses.
